Unlike in traditional films, the sound designers
in a hearing film create the acoustic events in the
room. In this way the characters can speak from the
back or from the side. In „The Pit and the Pendulum,“ the
sound preceded the images. The images don’t tell a story;
they communicate the atmosphere of the tale. The music, too,
brings out the mood of the frightening piece. Simon Bertling and Christian Hagitte won the ’Hörspiel
Award 2003’ (Soundtrack Award) for the best soundtrack music with this piece. “The Pit and the Pendulum“ also won the German ’Phantastikpreis 2004’ (fantasy prize)the following year. And the CD soundtrack was long at number 1 on the Amazon best-seller list. The Salzgeber edition of the surround sound hearing film will be in German cinemas in the Fall.
